There's no doubt that people are more efficient when their work environment is a clean and inviting space. However, it's also known that your desk space can become complete mayhem within one crazy work week. Here's our "How To" guide on keeping things in line.
The first step to organizing anything is to purge. You must have had your coffee before you can start this step and you need to get ruthless. The 3 different notebooks you've started because you keep forgetting them places and have to start new ones ... combine them and store the others for later. The 47 post-it notes from a meeting two months ago, do you need those? If so, can you toss them into Evernote and rid of the clutter? The PowerPoint handouts your boss demands be printed for every meeting, time to file those away (or toss em')! Dig into every drawer, organize in a way that is easiest for you, and create a clean space.
Next up, get comfortable. Sitting at a desk is seriously straining on your body. You need to make sure your computer is at a good height, your chair is as comfortable as can be and you have something to re-focus you when you're losing steam. Think stress ball, fidget spinner or even a meditation garden. Finally, is your office usually hot or cold? If you're lucky and it's always just right, that's amazing, but if not check out this desk fan or this desk heater.
Now, get practical. Your desk can't be flawless all the time, but you can have necessities that just make desk life better. Believe it or not, the light you work under can have an impact on your performance. You need a lamp that's both practical for your space and efficient at adapting. Next up, post-its. We were just telling you to clean them up earlier, but you also need them. Finally, clean up all those cables. Knotting up cables isn't ideal and letting them sprawl as they please is messy. Check out Tiny Cables; 8-inch cables created for decluttering your desk space.
The last step is optional; get excessive. The world of desk gadgets is often too tempting to narrow down so if you're into it, grab a thing or two that puts your space over the top. By now we're sure you've seen the deskcycle, the balance ball chair or even the foot hammock. All great options for over the top desk additions. Last up, the new Amazon Echo Show. The newest member of the Echo family with a screen, so it doubles as your clock, your weather report, your work calendar and if your co-workers let you, you've got Alexa to chat with, too.
That's it. Unless you're a corner office hot shot, this clean up will take no more than one late night at the office for those few times your desk gets out of control. Happy organizing!
